The History of the Melrose Hotel

The Melrose Hotel was built at a cost of two million dollars in 1924. In this era it, although called a “hotel”,  was actually a stylish, high rise apartment building. Designed by architect C.D. Hill the Melrose was part of an architectural dynasty that encompassed much of the city at the time, including:

  • Dallas County Club
  • Dallas Municipal Building
  • Fair Park Coliseum
  • Oak Lawn Methodist Church

In 1933 the hotel changed ownership and was held by the Melrose Hotel company until 1981. At this time the Dallas landmark was closed for remodeling, restoration, and repair.

When it opened again a year later it had been transformed into a luxury hotel with unique 184 suites, the Landmark Restaurant, and the Library Bar. Warwick International acquired the historic property and added it to their list of international premier hotels.

The Hotel

This romantic Dallas hotel is known for its spacious rooms. Each is decorated differently and, at this writing in January 2009, the hotel is just completing a redecoration project that will recreate the golden age of Hollywood glamour in each of the suites.

Each room contains:

  • European marble bath
  • Terry cloth robes
  • Make up mirror
  • Hair dryer
  • High speed Internet
  • Personalized voice mail
  • Cable TV.
  • In room safe
  • And more

The Landmark Restaurant

The Landmark Restaurant is an AAAA four diamond rated restaurant which runs smoothly under the careful watch of Executive Chef, Jeff Moschetti.  The menu is creative, unique, delicious, and served with creative style.

“Chef Jeff” has served as Executive Chef at Stephan Pyles, working closely with Chef Pyles in the development of the menu.  He describes his cooking philosophy as being “simple and fresh”.

The Calamari Salad, for example, consists of battered calamari served on lightly sautéed greens with a sweet chile dressing.  The fresh, complex flavor will have you coming back for more.  With an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients Chef creates entrees that will delight and amaze you.

The Executive Pastry Chef,  Rafael Torano, has specialized in pastry for twenty years.  His ’Adult Cupcake’ is a masterful combination of Guinness Stout chocolate cake, vanilla gelato, chocolate mousse, chocolate sauce, and a cherry on top lightly dusted with confectioner’s sugar.  Paired with a cup of Lavazza coffee it is the perfect ending to any meal.

Whether you will be meeting a business associate for an elegant lunch or drifting down into the sunny restaurant for a leisurely brunch you will find the service, the surroundings, and the food unmatched.

The Library Bar

The Library Bar recently reopened with new menu selections and updated décor.

With dishes like Texas venison chili and jalapeno corn muffins the menu gives guests a casual taste of Texas. For the traveler desiring a more international flavor the Global Raw Bar offers seafood dishes from many cultures around the world.

Some of the items from the Global Raw Bar include:

  • Scallops with orange macerated fennel and tangerine oil
  • Pacific ono with watermelon, smoked sea salt and cucumber
  • Tuna poke with candied kumquat and black sesame dust

Some of the many menu items include:

  • Landmark Burger featuring Akaushi Beef
  • Stuffed potato skins
  • Grilled flat bread with prosciutto, fig, and goat cheese

One of the most beautiful features of the Library bar is the lapis lazuli bar crafted from natural lapis. Faux painted mahogany paneling, tapestries, and leather seating create a luxurious old world look. A baby grand piano is the finishing touch, and the bar offers live music six days a week.
