Alice in Wonderland Tea Party

An Alice in Wonderland Tea Party is a little more sweet and feminine that the Mad Hatter Tea theme. It would be very appropriate for a feminine birthday, Red Hat party, or a special tea for someone who loves the movie. Since it is not planned around one scene in the book you can have a lot more creative freedom when it comes to planning and decorating.

Try to keep the decorations slightly on the dreamy side, however. Remember that Alice in Wonderland is a complete fantasy. Consider using inexpensive copies of the book as invitations. Just write on the inside cover:

Don’t be late for a very important date. An Alice in Wonderland Tea Party will be held on (date) at (time). The address is _________. Please RSVP at (email or phone).

If the books are out of your budget then what about playing cards? Write the invitation information with a sharpie marker on the cards and mail them to your guests.

You can also use the cards as great place cards by writing the name of each guest on one.

Although I am not sure that Carroll ever described Alice’s dress it is traditionally assumed to be baby blue. Using baby blue and white as your color theme can make it a simple thing to decorate for your Alice in Wonderland tea. Use a blue tablecloth and add large, white tulle bows to the corners of the table.  Consider using white roses as the flowers of choice and if you have time go around the edges with some red food coloring and a brush, and slap some red dye on a few of the petals randomly.

This is a great time to get little bunny figurines and put them in amongst the china on your table. Or, you can find figurines of the characters from the book. Keep them random and unexpected for the best results.

There are many directions you can go with the Alice in Wonderland Tea theme as far as food.

• Get manila tags and write “Drink Me” on them. Attach them to the tea cups with blue ribbon
• Use a variety of sizes of tea cups from demi-tasse to extra large
• A variety of teas
• Cucumber sandwiches
• Other small sandwiches
• Stuffed Mushrooms
• Grapes in bunches
• Easy Cherry Tarts
• Dip Oreo cookies in white chocolate and let set.  Use frosting to pipe “eat me” on the surface of the cookies.

If you plan to have games at the tea party then the first one to come to mind would probably be croquet. Children’s parties can continue with the Alice theme but putting a twist on the traditional birthday party games like pin the smile to the Cheshire Cat or having a flamingo piñata. If you want to do crafts then decorating hats would certainly be a fun thing to do. Basically, let your imagination be your guide in this.

Anytime you want to base a tea party on a book or a movie it is a good idea to review the movie (or book) both for detail and new ideas.  You can have a great time with an Alice in Wonderland Tea, doing everything from a costume party to a proper elegant tea. Always keep it fun and low stress by making as many things ahead of time as possible. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself.
