Vintage and Antique Spice Racks
Some of the most popular vintage spice racks are the milk glass spice jars with colored aluminum tops that were popular from the late 1800s to the 1940s. These white jars generally had some sort of decal on the fronts as decoration. They fit into a simple wire rack and were labeled with the name of the spice.
The milk glass jars with red tops are especially popular but there are other colors including:
- Black
- Teal
- Blue
- Yellow
Some of the most popular manufacturers were Griffith and Tipp with these selling for premium prices on eBay and in the antique stores. It is not unusual to see a full set of these, in good condition sell for $100.00. One of the most popular label designs is a blue silhouette dutch couple on milkglass spice jars with red tops. Full sets of these, in excellent condition, command top prices.
There were also specialty ceramic spice racks coming out of Japan. The jars were ofen figural, looking like chickens, books, or other items.
Another popular type of vintage kitchen spice racks became popular in the 1950s. Made of aluminum, these spice jars often had bakelite tops and matched canister sets.
By the 1960s manufacturers were using spice bottles that looked like vitamin bottles, with glass stoppers. These can be purchased very inexpensively.

Modern Spice Racks
Modern spice racks come in many different types. Some of them are retro to fit a country or primitive decor while others are very sleek and modern. Some aren't meant to be seen at all but fit in drawers or under cabinets.
If you are in a wheelchair then consider the best type of spice rack for you. It will need to be easily acessible. Door mounted and in drawer spice racks may not be the best because of the difficulty getting to them. Carousel types the sit on the counter may be your best option.
In Drawer Spice Rack
This kitchen spice rack is made to fit in the kitchen drawer. There are twelve bottles which you can label with the spices you choose. Clear labels are included with this.
The in drawer spice racks are great because they keep the spices out of sunlight which helps them to last longer. They are conveniently in the drawer anytime you need them without cluttering the kitchen or using valuable counterspace.
Zero Gravity Spice Rack
If you have a preference for the sleek and modern zero gravity spice racks are a sophisticated way to keep your spices handy.
It is magnetic and allows you to keep your spices attached to the top or floating in air on the bottom. Windows in the sides allow you so see what you have, and how much. The top is easily operated, just push to pour or sprinkle the spices out.
Because of the sleek design the zero gravity spice rack is easy to keep clean.
Door Mount Spice Racks
Door mount spice racks fit on the inside of pantry doors. This makes them easy to access while at the same time keeping them out of the way. They have the same benefit as in drawer spices in that they are protected from sunlight which can cause the herbs and spices to go stale and lose potency.
