Valentines Day Movies

By Marye Audet

Valentine's Day is officially the most romantic day of the year and what better way to spend it than cuddling with your love and watching a few Valentine's Day movies?

Romantic movies run the gamut from light comedies to serious emotional films like The Notebook. It is important to have an idea what type of movie your Valentine is going to be in the mood for. There is nothing worse than watching a movie that makes you cry for days when you were really in the mood for a few laughs and a happily-ever-after ending.

If you are going to serve some kind of snacks with the movie, keep them light. A full, bloated stomach is definitely not romantic. Stay away from Mexican food, pizza, pasta, and other heavy foods and opt instead for fruit, crackers, popcorn, or other snack foods.

Best Valentine's Day Movies

Here is a list of the best Valentine's Day movies. Are there any that are your favorites? Any that aren't on the list that should be?

When Harry Met Sally

This is an old movie but a great one. It has just enough comedy to be fun and just enough emotional scenes to keep it real. The movie follows two friends through a decade of their lives, as they break up with various significant others and use each other for emotional support. The deli scene is classic. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

Princess Bride

This is for those of you that love happily ever after. A fairy tale of the very best kind, Princess Bride has something for everyone from swashbuckling swordplay to a most romantic kiss. "As you wish" may be the most romantic phrase in the English language to anyone who has seen this movie.

The Notebook

This movie is deep and dramatic. It is not light comedy but it is amazingly romantic and feel good.  Not a movie for a first date, this is best for couples who understand deep commitment and the sacrifices it takes to make it.

Casa Blanca

Casa Blanca is a movie for classic movie lovers. It is another drama with a deep romantic plot. The setting is during World War II and Humphrey Bogart is at his brooding best in this movie. The cinematography is brilliant and sets the mood for each scene perfectly.

50 First Dates

This Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore movie is sweet and funny with plenty of "awwwwww…." moments.  Drew plays a woman who has short term memory loss and can only retain memory for 24 hours. Sandler plays the man determined to win her heart no matter how many times he has to introduce himself.

City of Angels

Nicholas Cage is an angel who falls in love with the human woman, played by Meg Ryan, that he is sent to be a guardian to. He trades his immortality for a lifetime of love. This is not a funny movie, but it is very romantic.

Ground Hog Day

O.k..not about Valentine's Day but Bill Murray and Andy MacDowell make a very romantic couple. Curmudgeon, Bill Murray must live Groundhog Day over and over again and each time he learns a little about himself and his priorities. This is a funny movie and filled with romantic comedy.

Love at First Bite

Some people will claim Twilight should be on the list but for romantic vampire movies you can't beat this 1970s classic. George Hamilton plays Dracula, a very dashing and romantic Dracula with an amazing ability on the dance floor.  This is definitely light comedy.

More Romantic Movies

Here are several more romantic movies, for Valentine's Day or anytime.

Mostly Martha

This is the original German movie that No Reservations was made from. Yes, you will have to deal with subtitles but the soup scene is….. amazing. If your Valentine is a foodie this movie is a no brainer.

Letters to Juliet

What would happen if you found a letter written over forty years ago? The main character not only answers the letter but attempts to reunite lovers that have been separated since for decades. She thinks she may have found true love herself, but is her realization too late? Comedy, drama, and a great bit of romance.

I Hate Valentine's Day

This is a great romantic comedy about a florist that sticks to a five date rule to protect her heart. It is very predictable but funny, romantic, and sweet at the same time.

Disney Romantic Classics

When you are thinking of romantic movies don't forget some of the classic Disney cartoons. It may seem cheesy but some of the plots are deeply romantic and the music can't be beat. These cartoons aren't just for kids!

Consider:

  • The Little Mermaid
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Aladdin
  • Lady and the Tramp

Valentine's Day movies are a fun, inexpensive way to have a romantic evening. Add a fire in the fireplace, a soft blanket and a couple of these movies and you could have the best Valentine's Day ever.

I've seen only three of these. I'm not an avid movie-goer. But my husband enjoys a chick flick with me occasionally.

Great overview of romantic movies! I love the Disney cartoons - lighthearted and fun. I thought about including 50 First Dates on my list of romantic movies, but went with Barrymore and Sandler in The Wedding Singer, instead. Cheers!
