Where to Buy Gardening Supplies
70
As spring approaches you may be wondering where to buy gardening supplies, especially if you are new to gardening. There are numerous choices for both the expert and the novice gardener no matter where you live. While it is easier to buy gardening supplies if you live near a large town, the Internet makes it possible for you to get the supplies you need no matter where you live.
While techies may live for the newest gadget and swoon over the most recent iPhone ap, gardeners' eyes light up at the sight of a new mix of compost and their heart beats a little faster as they read about the newest heirloom tomato being offered by their favorite seed company.
Local Stores
Almost every town has a Walmart, a Lowe's or a Home Depot within driving distance, no matter how small the town is. Each of these has garden centers with basic gardening supplies. While you aren't likely to find many organic gardening supplies you will be able to find the basics like trowels, manure, and conventional plants and seeds.
Some towns, especially the larger ones may have full sized plant nurseries where you will find more unusual plants, unique gardening supplies, and items to help you create a lush organic garden. Often the people that work in these garden centers are more knowledgeable about gardening than the sales people at home improvement stores, and can therefore answer your questions. They will know more about the climate and soil in your particular area and can advise you as to which varieties of plants will do the best. Their knowledge can save you time, money, and frustration.
It is a good idea to find one of these local centers regardless if you have a favorite online supplier of gardening tools. Before you begin your spring garden you will want to have everything you need ready to go. Make a list of things you will need and begin to collect them.
Where to Buy Gardening Supplies on the Internet
Buying gardening supplies on the Internet is as easy as writing the words "gardening supplies" in the search engine. Millions of suppliers from all over the world come up; each with a slightly different idea of what gardening should be about.
If you plan on having an organic garden it is a good idea to find a garden supply store that caters to your view rather than trying to work a conventional gardening philosophy into your organic mindset.
Gardening Direct
Gardening Direct is actually in the UK and is one of the top European online gardening sites. They have every kind of plant that you can imagine as well as tips and ideas for their growth. They have tools and supplies as well but they don't carry many, if any, organic items.
Direct Gardening
Direct Gardening is an American site that seems to be almost the same as Gardening Direct. It also has 1 cent sales on plants. There are numerous tools and helps on this site, but like the UK site, does not cater to organic gardeners.
The Happy Gardener
The Happy Gardener is the complete opposite of the other two, being primarily organic and eco-friendly. They have everything from tools to recycled items, to habitats to encourage beneficial predators.
Gardeners Supply
Gardeners Supply has grow lights as well as tools and other supplies. They also have some organic and eco-friendly supplies. One of the most interesting products is the garlic clips that are supposed to keep deer and rabbits away from your garden.
Planet Natural
Planet Natural carries garden supplies that are eco-friendly and organic. They have everything from composting supplies to natural pest control but do not have seeds or plants.
Seed Suppliers
Often a site that sells supplies does not sell seeds, and the companies that sell seeds do not often sell many supplies. Here is a list of garden seed companies.
Burpee
Burpee Seeds is still one of the biggest and best. They have many types of seeds and products for gardening but most are conventional rather than organic.
Park
Park Seed is probably the other seed company most people think of. Lots of seeds, many tools and supplies, but like Burpee most are conventional and not organic.
Territorial
Territorial Seed has unique seeds including some heirloom and some organic.
Just Do It
The only way to start a garden is to just do it. Once you know where to buy gardening supplies, make you list and go get what you need. In a few short weeks you will have a lush spring garden as long as you get the right tools, some seed and put some time into it.

Great info! Its that time of the year again, I actually just placed a seed order, and started my celery last week. Can't wait for spring, especially considering I just finished shoveling 2 ft of snow off my roof and we have another 2 ft expected.
